Review 100 is approaching
We’re flying towards Review 100 – it is just a week away. Jason Anonymous contacted to ask whether the 100th edition will be a bumper edition. The answer is no. He also suggested that the 100th featured highlights of the previous 99 issues. If anyone thinks I am reading through 99 issues of drivel, they are badly mistaken. Rest assured, issue 100 will arrive next week, but it will be similar to the previous 99.
Two wingers and flying high
Pegasus FC was a team comprised of Oxbridge students. Like Origami United, it folded in 1963. The club mysteriously disappeared after an Oxfordshire Senior Cup tie against Marston United, a club of some pedigree, as beer drinkers will know. Those of an ancient age may recall that Pegasus won the FA Amateur Cup in 1951 and 1953, playing in front of 100,000 spectators at Wembley on each occasion. Why do I tell you all this? Well, there are two Pegasus clubs playing nowadays – Hereford Pegasus and Stanway Pegasus. The Hereford version is mid-table in the Hellenic Premier League, while the Stanway team are riding high in the Eastern Counties Division One North despite two recent setbacks. Whether Stanway Pegasus can be champs remains to be seen. However, they’ll be champing at the bit to put that right and will hopefully be flying high again soon.
As he taps it into an empty net…
There has been a positive response to the footballing cock-up videos that I’ve posted recently. Here’s another one. I remember in my playing days missing some golden chances, but not one like this – https://twitter.com/i/status/1750593377094013391. If you missed last week’s videos, you can find them here.
Ruff luck
Charlie Ruff was the Chelmsford City hero when he netted the only goal of the National League South game at Hampton & Richmond Borough on Saturday. Charlie Ruff is well-travelled in non-League football, playing for several Essex and Hertfordshire-based teams, including Potters Bar, Hornchurch, Kings Langley, and Hertford Town, amongst several others. I rather wish that Charlie Ruff could play for Barking or even Barkingside, though.
Seeing red
The New Salamis v Redbridge game was abandoned in the 90th minute, with the visitors leading 2-1. A fight broke out between players and officials, with some members of the crowd joining the fray. Another matter is whether New Salamis can cure this problem and whether Redbridge can stop seeing red when the game is presumably replayed. There were no flying horses at New Salamis, just people flying off the handle.
Man trap
The Mintcake Army made the trip to the Isle of Man the weekend before last to see their heroes from Kendal Town take on FC Isle of Man in the North West Counties Premier League. After leading from an early James Bailey goal, there was disappointment for the travelling hordes when Dean Pinnington equalised in stoppage time. However, that was the least of the Mintcake Army’s problems. Storm Isha meant that the fans were trapped on the Isle of Man. When the storm subsided, Easyjet offered seats on their next flight to Liverpool on Thursday or a flight to Luton, which is just a few miles down the road from Kendal. Let’s hope they got back safely and enjoyed Luton.
Penalty box
Burgess Hill Town beat Horndean 1-0 at the weekend. The game was decided in the 88th minute when Harry Lawson was brought down in the box, leaving Martyn Box to score from the spot. I’m hoping for an interview and a pint with the Burgess Hill striker, Alex Brewer.
Maid in heaven
Well, that was a result and a half for Maidstone United. They went to Portman Road and beat the Championship promotion hopefuls, Ipswich Town, 2-1. They now face a 5th Round tie against Coventry City or Sheffield Wednesday.
Getting their ducks in a row
I always keep an eye on the fortunes of Aylesbury United after being made most welcome on my FA Trophy From Hashtag United to Wembley trail in 2021-22. On that day, the Ducks missed a penalty in normal time and lost in the penalty shoot-out. However, last weekend, they travelled to high-flying Bedford Town in the Southern League Division One Central and won 2-1. It was the Ducks that were flying high. After taking an early lead, the hosts came straight back with a goal from Mensah, presumably a highly intelligent player. Following a red card, the ten-duck Ducks scored late in the game through Brayden Daniel to take all three points.
Can Tornado Bello strike twice?
We all know about lightning not striking twice in the same place, but it appears there are two Tornado Bellos. As reported last week, Tornado Bello is one of Bude Town‘s star players. However, a well-informed reader tells us that there is also a wingless horse called Tornado Bello. Are there chants at Bude Town of “there are only two Tornado Bellos”?
Nomads win thanks to Armeni style
With one defeat all season, Anstey Nomads, the Leicestershire club, were losing 1-0 away to Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division. It would have been an impressive win for Dynamo, but two goals in stoppage time changed everything. Dynamo fans may have been thinking, “Don’t Bring Me Down“, as Ant Lynn equalised. Then, a corner from Corey Armeni went straight into the Dynamo goal to clinch the 2-1 win. We’re scouring non-League clubs to see if there is another player whose name has an insect-girl’s name combination. Now, I’ve just read about mosquito tornadoes; Tornado Bella, perhaps? Three Tornado Bellos? Oh dear, I’m humming Mr Blue Sky to myself. It’s time to go.
